Facebook Friends, M. Ömer Gölgeli

April 5th, 2009

M. Ömer Gölgeli
Ömer Gölgeli did not want to be my Facebook friend.   Not at first anyway.

When I made my request to be his friend he replied he only had people as Facebook friends who he had met face-to-face.    I knew this wasn't true because I had seen he had friends from all over the world.

The real reason he resisted becoming my Facebook friend because he thought I was an old geezer, which I am.    Also because his priority was in meeting attractive young women, which I am not.

He had some pretty good reasons.

At the time I was new to Facebook and thought it would be fun to have a friend what was a twenty-something, Sunni Muslim, from Turkey.    Believe it or not, here aren't many of those folks in my neighborhood.    I thought it would be fun to get to know one.

So I wrote him back and told him I had bought a plane ticket to Turkey so we could meet face-to-face.   He did not believe me, of course, but I got his attention.

He relented and allowed me into his circle of Facebook friends.    I am glad he did.

Though we don’t communicate at huge lengths, we do exchange messages fairly regularly.   He refers to me as "Old Man", which I might take offense at except I am an old man and he seems to regard me with a certain fondness.

We have had discussions about politics, religion, and what is going on in the world.    It has been interesting to see the world from his perspective.    Our exchanges have certainly enhanced my life.

Ömer was one of the first Facebook friends I made from outside of my country.    I am glad he relented and allowed me into his circle of Facebook friends.    He has certainly given me a broader view of the world.

Favorite Politicians, Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko

April 5th, 2009

Yulia Tymoshenko
I love this gal.

Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko is a Ukrainian politician and current Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Before becoming Ukraine's first female Prime Minister, Tymoshenko was one of the key leaders of the Orange Revolution. In this period some Western media publications dubbed her as the "Joan of Arc of the Revolution".    In my book, that is way cool.

Prior to her political career, Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko was a successful but controversial businesswoman in the gas industry, which made her wealthy.    Some people think she is a crook.    But then, some people have rather stodgy ideas of what it takes to succeed in politics.

She was once arrested on charges of forging customs documents and smuggling of gas between 1995 and 1997 (while president of United Energy Systems of Ukraine).    Her political supporters organized several protest rallies near the Lukyanivska Prison where she was held in custody.    She was found innocent and released.

According to Tymoshenko, the charges were fabricated by political the regime in power.    In spite of being cleared of the charges, Moscow maintained an arrest warrant for her should she enter Russia for over four years.    Those Russians do hold a grudge.

She has twice been ranked by Forbes magazine as being among the most powerful women in the world.    She is ranked by me as one of the most interesting politicians I have ever encountered.

It is embarrassing that the Unites States doesn't have any politicians that are even remotely this cool.

Favorite Politicians, Pavel Goberman

April 1st, 2009

I am a big fan of Pavel Goberman.

Pavel is a 71 year old gentleman who owns his own fitness company and is remarkably fit and energetic.    He is also amazingly passionate about his politics.

He frequently runs for office.    His campaigns are very outspoken, very emotional, and packed with action.    So far he has never won, though he does get a lot of press.

Pavel sees evil and corruption in places most others don't notice it.    He is extremely outspoken in his efforts to expose corrupt politicians, crooked businesses, and evil doers of all stripes.

He has probably annoyed about every major political figure in Oregon.    A laudable accomplishment in itself.

In his last run to become the United States Senator from Oregon he spoke before the Washington County Public Affairs Forum.

I created a Youtube video of his talk which so far has been views 1,518 times.    This is by far the most popular Youtube political video I have posted, and I've posted a bunch of them.

That video is shown on this page.

If you would like to get up-to-date information on Pavel's current political views you can seen them here.

If you'd like to learn more about this unique political phenomenon, just Google Pavel Goberman.

There's a lot of information out their for your reading and viewing enjoyment.

Favorite Politicians, Kyle Corbin

Kyle Corbin
Kyle Corbin pulled off one of the most amazing political upsets in Oregon history, and most Oregonians never heard of him.

That's because Kyle's political victory happened the tiny (population 1,960) city of Union Oregon.

What is phenomenal about the rise of Kyle Corbin is he was elected Mayor of Union when he was seventeen years old AND ran as a write-in candidate.    He was a write-in because, at age seventeen, he wasn't old enough to be put on the ballot.

Fortunately, by the time he was elected he was eighteen, and old enough to serve.

Kyle ran in a time of political turmoil.

In 2004 two longtime city councilors were recalled and the police chief was indicted.    Deborah Clark, the woman who led the recall effort, was elected mayor in 2004 and her husband, Roger Clark, was elected as city councilor.    They were both recalled, the administrator fired, and the police chief resigned leaving the town without a law enforcement officer.

Kyle was elected in 2006 after a successful write-in campaign.

He promised to bring an end to the political chaos that plagued the town.    He was elected with 46 percent of the vote in a three candidate race.    He ran an old-fashioned, door-to-door campaign as a write-in candidate.    His 399 votes topped the 271 received by outgoing City Councilor Scott Morrison, 59.   A former city councilor, Dick Middleton, 64, finished with 200 votes.

Since Kyle became Mayor, politics in the City of Union have quieted down.   The city seems quite happy with it's young Mayor and the furor that preceded him has settled down.

Those of you who are interested in Oregon politics, keep an eye on Kyle Corbin.    He is a young man to watch.

Willie looking in the gun
Pulls the trigger just for fun.
Mother says in tones so pained,
"Willie is so scatter-brained!".

Willie bashed open baby’s head
To see if brains are gray or red
What a naughty boy is he
He shall have no jam for tea.
